family
i have always been amazed by my grandparents, who made their way with nine children & three grandchildren from vietnam to the united states in 1975. they first settled in buffalo, new york, where they had received sponsorship through father joe’s church, & there they experienced their first snow & their first taste of american traditions. a move to northern california & nineteen grandchildren later, we continue to celebrate thanksgiving, where two turkeys (at least) are included as part of the dinner spread (i’ve a lot of guy cousins).
i am so grateful for the traditions i grew up with, & for the endless family with whom to celebrate everything, big or small. my grandmother did good in keeping everyone together. she will be missed this year.
